I disguised myself as an elderly woman from the senior center, Ralph as my helper, and went to visit Miriam. My disguise was flawless, and I was even several inches shorter. I knocked on the door, forcing my features into a look of fraility. It should have worked. There was just one little problem.
I forgot that Miriam Doun has no soul.
She opened the door, took one look at me, and slammed it in my face. I instantly felt Ralph tense up beside me, but I could only sigh. I shrugged and knocked again.
"Can I punch her when she opens the door again," Ralph hissed. His eyes literally blazed the way Apollo's does when he's angry.
Placing my hand on his shoulder, I shook my head. "No, you may not."
I was going to say something more, but Miriam opened the door again. "What?!" she snapped.
"Ma'am, my name is Catherine Sallow. I live at the senior's home. The girls and I were wondering if Stephanie could come back and visit us again. We miss her when the other Glametime girls come in." I smiled and met her eye. "She's so vibrant and youthful. We need that every now and then."
"Then get it from the other girls. It's a waste of Stephanie's time. From now on, she's learning to play the violin during the time she was seeing you old hags."
I nearly hit her for that, but I managed to control myself. "But she already plays the lute, and beautifully."
"No one cares about the lute. Goodbye." Once again, the door was in my face. It seems there's no reasoning with that woman. I hate her. I really do. |
